QLS Online Storytelling Events: Connecting Classrooms Through the Power of Stories.

Our innovative storytelling program is a collaboration between the QLS Book Club and the QLS Content Team.

WHO WE ARE (QLS)

QLS NETWORK OF QUALITY LANGUAGE SCHOOLS
QLS (Quality Language Schools) is an association of 40 private language schools in Greece, operating since 2002. It is ISO 9001 certified and an associate member of EAQUALS. QLS supports member schools through innovative language programs, quality standards, and extracurricular events that enrich teaching methodologies and strengthen community ties.

AIMS

Storytelling is a key part of the QLS curriculum. Many schools have designated reading corners with carefully selected books from the QLS Book Club. The QLS Online Storytelling Events aimed to foster a love for language through engaging storytelling. By creating an interactive and immersive experience, the events built confidence, sparked creativity, and connected learners across the QLS network, extending learning beyond individual classrooms.

THE EVENTS

• Two online Christmas storytelling events.
• Participation from 40 language schools across Greece.
• Multiple sessions held in December 2023 & December 2024.
• Hundreds of Junior to A1-level learners took part.
• Professional storytellers: Ms. Zafi Mandali and Ms. Maria Zourari.
• Carefully selected, adapted Christmas stories:
  • Little Robin Red Vest by Ian Fernley (Little Robin’s Christmas).
  • Just Right for Christmas by Birdie Black and Rosalind Beardshow (A Christmas Present for Everyone).

MATERIALS & DRAMATIZATION

To enrich learners’ engagement before, during, and after each storytelling event, the QLS BOOK CLUB team and the Content Team created original materials specially designed for our stories in order to enhance comprehension, interaction, and creativity. These resources provided a multi-sensory learning experience, making storytelling more immersive and enjoyable for young learners.

• Student Workbook – 2,100 copies (2023) and 2,500 copies (2024) printed and distributed. Included pre-teaching activities, comprehension questions, and a simplified version of the story.
• PowerPoint Presentation – A visual aid for online storytelling.
• Thematic Craft Activities – Hands-on projects reinforcing vocabulary, e.g., making a Christmas stocking.
• Dramatization Materials – Puppets, props, and interactive techniques like Jazz Hands and voting prompts.
• Music & Action Songs – Carefully chosen songs and chants enhanced engagement.
• Teachers’ Guidelines – Provided to help teachers facilitate learner participation.
• Gift Bags – Each child received a small themed gift alongside the workbook.

BENEFITS & IMPACT

The event brought together hundreds of English learners across Greece, fostering a sense of community.

Professional storytellers made the experience engaging, while the dynamic, interactive approach ensured active participation through songs, role-playing, and props. Teachers gained valuable techniques, and students improved language skills while embracing themes of love, kindness, and sharing.

The overwhelming success and enthusiastic participation have led to the establishment of the QLS Annual Christmas Storytelling Event.
