At English Drama MicroSchool we believe thoughtfully curated classroom is a silent teacher, inviting students to a new learning experience, guiding discovery and nurturing independence. From our carefully selected materials to the way we arrange our spaces, every detail has a purpose.
The centre of the school is our very own Olive Tree and the hot sun in the center of the amphitheater that warms our hearts up and brings out a feeling of coziness and a sense of community. The shape of the amphitheater also encourages interaction and open discussion between children, while it is perfect for reflection, theatre shows, community talks, meetings, events, charity events, storytelling sessions.
Opposite the amphitheatre stairs, there is convertible wooden bench which becomes a theatrical stage. There is a second theatrical stage in one of our classrooms, which offers a huge storage room full with props. Huge storage closets exist everywhere in our schools so as to have everything organised and well hidden to avoid visual noise.
Classrooms are equipped with different desks that form different shapes depending on what kind of activities we are going to embark on from individual projects to group or pair work. Magnetic whiteboards, interactive whiteboards, small blackboards are available for every kind of work. Collaborative places, test places and flat surfaces are created for special projects and other assignments. Different work stops and Circle spots around round carpets for our students assembly (Freinet pedagogy), kitchens and shops for pretend play, Montessori houses spark students’ curiosity and offer learning stimuli.
Our schools offer dyslexia friendly learnings environment and classrooms that accommodate different learning styles, equipped with bean bags, floor cushions, foam blocks exercise and balance balls, stools, yoga mats, light tables which are also used as low tables, lap desks and woodens desks, office chairs and regular chairs. Something as simple as having multiple seating styles to choose from can accommodate different learning needs and preferences helping students feel more welcome. For example, students who have anxiety or sensory processing disorders can be overly sensitive to certain types of fabrics or materials, therefore we provide velvet and soft cushions, wooden chairs and wooden floor while we avoid plastic chairs or desks. Moreover, the use of moody lightables and the bubble wall offers students with developmental difficulties, ADHD and leaning difficulties the chance to calm down and be absorbed in the learning procedure. Carefully designed lighting system with different lights, from spotlights and hidden lighting to dyslexia friendly lights and cinematic projectors are installed in every classroom, hallways and shared spaces. Big windows contribute to well ventilated classrooms with the maximazation of the use of natural light. Moreover, we have incorporated technology into the daily learning process as there are computers, mobile devices, headphones, and other equipment that lets students conduct research, practice learning new skills, and then create a project to show what they learned.
Our Secret Room (Lending Libray) and our classrooms’ cozy corners as reading nooks invite our students to joyful reading journeys. To avoid visual noise we have no posters on the walls. However, in order to create a sense of pride to our students so as to display their work, we use pegs, peglines and clipboards to display their work in specifically organized areas.
Our schools premises are accebile to everyone and try to provide students with learning spaces, tools and materials to work with in order to explore the English language through Theare, Music, Robotics, individual and group work, presentations, STEM. Students have the freedom to make learning decisions for themselves feeling more in charge of their own development and have the chance to explore the world through the English Language.
