Snakes and ladders
Our students created a 3D board game “Snakes and Ladders”. This classic board game was transformed into an effective educational tool. It is the type of game that works for any age groups – We have used it from kindergarten to adults – nearly every student, regardless of ages, prefers learning through games! A nice fun break, a consolidation of learning, a test, team-building – there are many ways to use this! It’s as flexible as we want it to be.
We customised the game board to include educational content relevant to the children’s learning.
How to use:
Vocabulary Reading
Each numbered has a word or picture. The students must say the word, spell it or use it in a sentence before moving forward.
Grammar practice
Each space contains a grammar challenge. The students might be asked to fill in the blanks of a sentence, identify the correct verb tense or change a sentence from singular to plural.
Conversation Practice
Students land on a space and answer a personal question (the questions can be structured around specific themes (e.g. family, hobbies, daily routine). As for the advanced learners they must ask the next player a related question to encourage dialogue.
Sentence formation
Players get a set of words and must form a correct sentence.
Storytelling
Each numbered space might contain a part of a story or a prompt. The players must continue the story logically.
Pronunciation Practice
The spaces contain challenging words or tongue twisters and the players must pronounce it correctly to move forward.
Dobble
Dobble is a great card game for quick thinking and bit of new vocabulary or revising grammar. It’s just a load of cards. What makes the cards interesting is that you can choose any two cards from the set and there is always exactly one matching picture between the two cards. There are various ways you can play with these cards.
Each player (in our case student) is dealt a card and places it face up in front of them. The dealer (teacher) reveals the top card of the deck and players have to find their matching item and say it out loud. The winner receives the card and it becomes their new card as they place it face up in front of them, over their original. The dealer reveals the next card and the game continues until all of the cards are used. At the end of the game the winner is the player with the most cards.
The cards can be used for more than just vocabulary revision however. We have made a set of cards with people showing action verbs and we can play it with Present Continuous in mind. We can play the same games as before, but this time students have to say a short sentence instead of just the verb or the word.
Now instead of “play” – “The girl is playing.”
Instead of “walk” – “The man is walking.”
