TEACHING ADULTS : A CHALLENGING AGE GROUP
Nomination Description
OUR METHODOLOGY:
- Selection of current affairs texts from various newspapers such as the daily or the news , which the students summarize and express their opinion on the topic.
- Creation of terminology texts which we analyze and translate the corresponding vocabulary and are adapted to the profession of each student through the diffit for teachers application.
- We watch mini videos from Ted Talks which we discuss in class , express our opinion and assign tasks on them.
- We use peer-to-peer learning methods and tools to enhance the learning outcomes, facilitating them as needed.
- The teacher mentions proverbs and asks students to analyze the content using words and concepts related to the topic.
- Grammar is taught using concise diagrams rather than endless pages of theory and the student is asked to create their own sentences with them.
- In order to make the listening part an enjoyable process we use songs through the LyricsTraining app and create games tailored to the level of the students.
- We also listen to podcasts with current news and comment on topics.
USE OF DIGITAL TOOLS
- We create vocabulary and grammar games through the word wall to make the lesson more enjoyable.
- We have implemented our own platform called e-makedi.gr in which we introduce automated grammar and vocabulary exercises in English, Italian and Spanish.
- Each student has a personal code through the “epafos” application and monitors their progress based on the scores they receive.
Application and use of the language
- All classes create groups on viber or messenger and exchange memories with each other in the language being taught. The groups are joined by the teacher who helps or even corrects.
- We encourage them to use the language in every day context as much as possible , such as change the language of the mobile and computer from Greek to the language they are taught.
- Write the supermarket list in the foreign language
- Create labels that they can stick on the products they have in their kitchen or office. In this way they are left with everyday words
- Read everything they look up in search engines in the language they are learning
- Join Facebook groups where they can exchange languages with natives (tandem language groups)
The methodology we follow at the school receives positive reviews every day as a huge percentage of 99% result in successful language degrees. Our school also incorporates assessment tools like classroom polling through mentimeter and online quizzes.
