Nomination Description

Maria Giachali School Our school is a small community, filled with love and everybody cares for each other.It’s situated in a very beautiful and sunny building of 700 square meters with big classrooms.It provides students with a safe and inclusive environment, with strong values, respect and discipline and it encourages diversity and student engagement. In our school we use: Our gold-awarded educational programme: Learning while having fun Learning while having fun involves incorporating elements of play, creativity, and engagement into the educational process. There shouldn’t be any dichotomy between enjoyment and learning. Learning becomes more engaging and effective when it is infused with fun, activities, laughter, noise, and love. So in our curriculum we include: Story Telling Events We have storytelling events where children are encouraged to write and illustrate their own stories, which enhances literacy and creativity.A newspaper club We have a newspaper club. 3 times a year we publish our own newspaper, and we distribute it for free in the schools of the area, and everybody (students and parents) feel extremely proud.Our lesson is always role-played Our lesson is always role-played. Every time we read the next passage, we share among the class the roles of the characters of the story. We change our voices depending on the age and the gender or even the kind (animal-human) of the character.Projects We make a lot of projects. Our aim is to teach essential communication and social skills, such as active listening and effective speaking, to build their confidence, to reduce bullying, to set students up for future success.Ted-Ed Our School is a member of TedEd community and our aim is to strengthen their throughlines and talk arcs by presenting their ideas at their classmates in a big event that will take place this summer. The theme is going to be :“Helping the women that have no rights in their countries” Trips We take them on many trips, either in Greece or abroad. We want to open their horizons and build their interpersonal relationships among them. We celebrate every occasion out and loud We have great Christmas festivals, and every year we sing the carols in the neighborhood. Instead of getting money, our students offer the people a calendar that they have made for the new year. Every year we prepare hand-made products exhibition for Easter, that after showing to parents what their children have made, we give it to them to take it home. Of course, we have great Carnival and Halloween parties. Every summer we also have a great festival with over 4,000 people some of the times. CANDY WAR with this game, they learn to respect each other because they are obliged to pick up only one candy and leave all the rest for their classmates. Yoga We offer our students relaxing yoga using the English language. This is really fun. Myrsini’s Village We use the Myrsini’s Village, where children actually take roles like in real life. We have altered different places inside our school, and we exchange them with other classes during our lesson. We have a well-equipped kitchen where we can practically cook or bake. This is also so much fun. Sweet Videos We create sweet and touching videos that we send to their parents so that they can admire their kids, like on Mother’s Day.Charities Also, we try to teach them valuable skills, like being a volunteer. We take them to the local church, and we cook twice a year for the poor people of the community. We also want to get them out of their comfort zone, and we ask them to offer from their pocket money a present for the children of Elpida every Christmas. In this way, we teach them how to help people who are in need.Thematic weeks We also have thematic weeks. For example, there is a pyjamas week or a flip-flop week just to make them feel “at home.” Love The only ingredient that is needed in the education recipe is love.
